Garden fences and furniture are made of many pieces of wood, the ends of which can soak up moisture. Make sure to cover those ends and any parts near the ground to keep the wood from soaking up too much moisture.

Let coating penetrate cracks and knots to keep out water that can cause mildew. Also, don’t paint in direct sunlight.

Use boards with rounded or angled ends if building a fence. Water slides more easily off such ends and extends the life of fence stakes. Flat ends retain water and should be avoided.

Painting garden furniture:

  1. Paint the lower sections.
  2. Paint the legs.
  3. Paint the upper sections.
  4. Sand between coats with 220-grade sandpaper if you want a smooth surface. Don’t overly sand the edges of the boards or you could make the protective coating too thin.
