Causes

  1. Application of a second coat before the coating is dry.
  2. Lack of flexibility of an aged solvent-based coating.
  3. Coating applied excessively.
  4. Solvent-based coating applied to a surface subjected to significant thermal movements.

Solutions

  1. Also for causes 2-4: Clean surfaces, remove coating by sanding, scrapping or striping the surface, prep surfaces properly and repaint with the proper coating.
  • Use a water-based coating on surfaces subjected to significant thermal movements.
