Persisting odour

Persisting odour

Causes

  1. Excessive humidity.
  2. Application of solvent-based coatings, sealants or adhesives or of certain water-based coatings. Solvent-based coatings will smell for a longer period than water-based coatings.
  3. Contaminated coating that will not dry.
  4. Old batch requiring a longer drying time.

Solutions

  1. Heat and ventilate the room(s).
  2. Ventilate the room(s) until odour has disappeared.
  3. Clean surfaces, remove coating by sanding, scraping or striping surfaces. Clean surfaces again and apply coating.
  4. Allow coating to dry and ventilate the room(s) until odour has disappeared.
  • Sheets, curtains and carpets tend to retain odour(s) in their fibres. They should be cleaned to eliminate odour(s) more rapidly.
  • Old varnishes may take longer to dry. The application of a recent batch of the same product may accelerate drying time.
