When summer is at its peak, there’s no better way to celebrate than with an outdoor gathering, and the simplest way to do that is by preparing some good food and finding a nice spot for a picnic to be enjoyed in great company. Because, let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a great summer picnic?

Whereas you’ve decided to enjoy a pleasant summer morning or afternoon, there are a few basic essentials that should be considered to guarantee a successful gathering. The key is to plan ahead and be as organized as you can. First, you have to choose the time of day, as this will determine the menu. Once you’ve settled on this, you’ll have to pick a location. The great thing about summer is that you can load a basket and have a picnic practically anywhere! Whether you head off to the park, the beach or to your own backyard, the basics remain the same.

Once you have the time and location figured out, the fun begins! Start with a great tote or a basket large enough to hold a big blanket or throw, a cutting board, disposable napkins, utensils, glasses, and plates. As for food and drinks, think of ready to pack and easy to consume options that can be prepared in advance. Finger foods like crackers and veggies, dips such as hummus and guacamole, or cheese and cured meats to nibble on are all wonderful ideas, as are sandwiches and fresh summer salads. Refreshing drinks like homemade lemonade and naturally infused water are excellent alternatives to plain water, and to satisfy those with a sweet tooth, consider fresh fruits or healthy muffins. Don’t forget to pack insect repellent, sunscreen and hand sanitizer as they can come in handy; and just for fun, bring some games and activities like a Frisbee, balls, board games, and an iPod for enjoying the latest tunes.

While it may seem like a lot of stuff to pack, getting ready for a picnic is actually easier than it appears – it all comes down to being organized and making sure you plan ahead of time. So whether you decide to hit a park, your own backyard or the beach, one thing is certain: there is no better combination than good food, great company and lots of sunshine!
