Tips On Staining

How to prepare exterior wood for staining

Exterior Wood Surface Preparation

Surface preparation is the key to your staining success. Skipping or rushing steps may lead to peeling, uneven penetration or premature wear. Take the time now and enjoy the results for years to come!

FIND THE RIGHT STAIN FOR YOUR PROJECT

STEP 1: Inspect the surface

Remove any loose, peeling stain by sanding, scraping or wire brushing. Previous stain not in sound condition should be completely removed with a wood stripper.

Repair any worn elements, fixing or replacing loose, damaged or rotting boards, and tightening loose screws.

STEP 2: Clean the surface

To ensure proper stain penetration, clean weathered or dirty surfaces with SICO Liquid Cleaner, Brightener and Conditioner for Exterior Wood (771-333A).

Remove mildew with a solution of household bleach (1 part household bleach to 3 parts of water). Never mix bleach with wood cleaner.

Rinse well with clear water and let completely dry.

STEP 3: Finalize your preparation

Sand the surface to open the wood grain for better stain penetration. Use 80–120 grit sandpaper on vertical surfaces and 60–80 grit sandpaper on horizontal surfaces.

Remove sanding residue by brushing the surface and rinsing again with clear water.

Wait until completely dry before applying stain.
